Wilkes EDC members joined the Wilkes Chamber of Commerce for its 78th annual membership celebration at the Walker Center on January 23rd. The event recognized local businesses and individuals with awards such as Excellence in Business, Small Business of the Year, the Chairman’s Award, and the Citizenship Service Award.
A new award was introduced that evening—the Linda Cheek Leadership Award, which honors an outstanding participant of the Leadership Wilkes program. Leadership Wilkes, part of the Vision 20/20 initiative, has helped 360 members over the past 24 years gain valuable insights into the county’s needs and opportunities. This is just one example of Linda Cheek’s lasting influence on the growth and development of Wilkes County.
As Linda steps into retirement after 26 years of dedicated service as the Wilkes Chamber of Commerce President, we also recognize her incredible contributions to both the Chamber and the wider community. Wilkes EDC is especially grateful for her role in supporting initiatives that have shaped the county’s future, including the continued collaboration between the Chamber and our organization.
At the same time, the evening marked the beginning of a new chapter for the Chamber as Cindy Thompson was introduced as the new president, effective February 3. Cindy is passionate about Wilkes County’s growth. She brings a strong background in entrepreneurship, business development, and community engagement to the Chamber, making her an ideal leader for this new chapter.
Cindy’s contribution as a Board of Director to Wilkes EDC has made a significant impact. Particularly in her role of assisting us in achieving the LEAP Forward Campaign goal. We are excited to continue our work with her as she steps into her new leadership role at the Chamber.
